The San Juanico Bridge, the longest bridge in the Philippines with a length of 2.16 kilometers and considered one of the most beautifully-designed bridges, is an S-shaped bridge connecting the islands of Samar and Leyte across the San Juanico Strait - the longest strait in the world. It is part of the Maharlika Highway which traverses from Luzon to Mindanao.

The bridge designed by one of the famous Filipino engineers, Arvin Valderrama, is supported by 43 spans rising 41 meters above the sea. It has a large arch beneath which allows boats to pass.

BORONGAN CITY BRIEF HISTORY

Its development into a municipality is traced back since the early 1600 from the scattered hamlets settled on the banks of Guiborongani (Borongan or Sabang) River and Loom River. Guiborongani was the bigger settlement and was later on called Borongan because of heavy fogs that covered the place. The name Borongan was taken from the word "Borong", the local term for fog, which in the Waray-Waray language means 'fog'. The people along the eastern coast of Samar were called "Ibabao" during the pre-Spanish period. 75 years after Ferdinand Magellan's landing in Homonhon, Eastern Samar, Spanish Jesuit missionary priests began to evangelize the whole island of Samar. The first missions were first established in Tinago, Western Samar and gradually occupied Palapag, a town in the eastern coast of the island.

The development of Borongan was greatly influenced by the religious missions of the Jesuits during the period 1604–1768, and the Franciscans from 1768–1868. Borongan was established as a pueblo on September 8, 1619. On this date, the Commandancia and the Very Reverend Father Superior of the Jesuits from Palapag, which is now a town of Northern Samar, went to Ibabao to install the first priest of Borongan, Fr. Manuel Martinez, who served up to 1627.

At the outbreak of revolution in 1898, Borongan was the site of uprising led by the pulahans. The first public officials were Sr. Magno Abenis, President, and Andres Hipe, Vice-President, who held office in 1899 to 1903. After the Japanese occupation, the place was led by a mayor and a vice-mayor. Hilarion Basada and Ignacio Brozas were the first mayor and vice-mayor, respectively in 1945 to 1947.

Borongan was legally made as a capital town when Eastern Samar was created as a province under Republic Act No. 4221 which was enacted on June 19, 1965.

On June 21, 2007, Borongan became the first city in Eastern Samar. However, it recently lost its cityhood, along with 15 other cities, after the Supreme Court of the Philippines granted a petition filed by the League of Cities of the Philippines, and declared the cityhood law (RA 9394) which allowed the town to acquire its city status, unconstitutional. The said cities, the court ruled, did no

700-hectare corn plantation to start operating in Samar

TACLOBAN — President Gloria M. Arroyo will lead the launching next week of a 700-hectare yellow corn plantation project on Parasan Island in Daram, Samar.

Leo Cañeda, regional executive director of the Department of Agriculture (DA) for Eastern Visayas, said the farm would be the biggest in the region and would contribute at least 5% to the region’s corn output.

Only quality corn seeds will be used in a bid to raise production to five metric tons per hectare from the current two metric tons per hectare.

"We had preliminary consultation and discussions with around 200 farmer beneficiaries. We will deliver the initial 200 bags of seeds next week," Mr. Cañeda said.

"The result of our soil analysis indicates that the area is highly suitable for corn cultivation," he added.

Farmers will pay only P600 for a bag of seeds, which normally costs P2,600.

They will also get free packs of fertilizer.

Press Statement of the City Government of Catbalogan on cityhood issue

Jan. 26, 2009

This is to formally inform the public that on November 14, the Supreme Court (SC) released a decision declaring the cityhood of 16 LGUs including Catbalogan as unconstitutional. In view of this ill-timed and unfortunate news, we wish to reassure our fellow Catbaloganons that the City Government is doing everything in its power to properly address this problem and with God’s grace, Catbalogan, shall and will remain as a component city.

In view of this, administration stands firm in its conviction that our cityhood was obtained lawfully. We went through the required processes and have overcome all the difficulties and obstacles that were thrown in its path. Most importantly, it emanated from the people of Catbalogan with a resounding majority of 25,426 votes cast in its favor. These justifications increased our confidence in the constitutionality of our cityhood and our strength to defend it before the Supreme Court.

As things stand now, Catbalogan remains and still is a city. No more less than the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Hon. Reynato S. Puno, clearly and categorically declared that the decision of the Supreme Court is not yet final and executory. Just recently, on December 10, we filed our Motion for Reconsideration (MR) before the SC.

Pending the resolution of the MR, the City of C
